Surrounded by a pool, the Golden Temple, also known as the Harmandir Saheb is the holiest seat of religious significance for the Sikhs. The 4th Sikh Guru Ramdas on digging the holy pool founded the temple in 1573. In 1601, the 5th Sikh Guru Arjan Dev established a temple called 'Haramandir'. In 1601 Harmandir Sahib was completed and it was after 3years that the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Holy Book was placed there.

It is an important pilgrimage for both Hindus and Sikhs, as well as for people from other faiths. There is a Sikh Gurudwara and a Lakshman temple built on the bank of the lake.
